My brother in church in the forenoon. Lent Mr Carman my horse in the forenoon. I dined on a sparerib roasted, and just as I had dined, Mr Read came to dress my leg. He dined on the remains. In the afternoon took a ride to Lewes to pay my intended wife a visit, with whom I drank tea and spent the afternoon and indeed part of the night. Came home about 2:45…

Sam Jenner, a-drawing off a cask of cider for me, dined with me on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of some hog’s feet and ear. Rec’d of Joseph Fuller in cash 2.17.6 in full for 1 year’s window tax and half a year’s land tax due at Lady Day last. At home all day and pretty busy. My leg thank God something better.

Sam Jenner coming in the evening late took part of my bed. In the evening read part of Pringle’s Treatise on the Diseases of the Camp and Army. Paid John Nutley in cash 7/8 in full for 1 bushel of flour on the parish account.

The draft Sam Jenner is to carry to Maresfield for me tomorrow in order to meet the deputy receiver of the land tax for this county, which bill when paid is in full for one year’s window tax and half for a year’s land tax due at Lady Day last.

I dined on a hog’s haslet roasted. In the afternoon took a ride for air. Drank tea at Mr Carman’s, but did not stay. Paid Mr Thomas Burfield 7/- for 12 beehives bought and received of him today.

In the afternoon my servant went to Whitesmith Fair. Sent Mr John Crouch… £10. Rec’d of Edward Hope in cash 1.11.0 in full for half a year’s land tax and one year’s window tax due at Lady Day. Made the land tax books for the ensuing year.

I dined on some hogs’ liver and caul fried. Paid Mr John Goldsmith, beadle of the manor of Laughton, 8d in full for 8 years’ quit rent due for Mr Thomas Neatby’s house in this parish as [late Jones’] at St Michael last. Rec’d of John Piper in cash 9.14.0, which I am to send Mr Allen Chatfield at Croydon for Mrs Mary Mills at Carshalton and which is in full for 1 year’s rent due from the devisees of Mr Will Piper deceased to the said Mrs Mills at old Lady Day last. In the evening wrote my London letters. At home all day. My leg mending.
