Myself and servant at church in the morning… We had a brief read for damages by fire to John Bodmin at Chauk in Kent (to be collected from house to house), whose damages by fire amounted to upwards of £1231. James Trill and Lucy Mott were asked at our church the first time.

We dined on part of a calf’s head boiled, and a piece of bacon and spinach. No churching at our church this afternoon, Mr Porter preaching at Laughton. Thomas Davy at our house in the afternoon, and drank tea with us, and to whom I read one of Tillotson’s sermons.

Holy Thursday, May 15 1760

In the morning my brother called on me in his road to Dicker Fair, but did not stay. After breakfast I went to the sale again, but could not buy anything to my mind, so did not stay any time. My family at home dined on the remains of Tuesday’s dinner, as did I when I came home, on some bread and butter and tea. I spent today 6d. At home all the remainder of the day, and but very little to do. A melancholy time.

Wednesday, May 14 1760

After breakfast I rode to Heathfield where there was a sale of shop goods, one Stephen Smith and his son having failed in trade. I bought several odd things for which I paid Mr Robert Olive the salesman 3.5.3. From thence I went to my brother’s at Framfield, where I drank tea (or rather dined)… After tea my brother and I went to Uckfield Fair where we stayed about 1 hour and half. I came back with my brother by Framfield but did not stay. I came home about 7:50… A very fine pleasant day, and I think there was a large fair.
