In the fore part of the day I was out on the roads as surveyor, the parishioners being warned out to work on the high roads. There were out John Cayley’s, Mrs French’s and Edward Hope’s carts and the following laborers: John Watford the elder for Mrs Atkins, John Watford the younger for himself, Joseph Burgess for himself, Thomas Burfield for Joseph Fuller, John Gasson for Joseph Durrant, and Richard Hope for himself.

I dined on a hog’s flesh pudding. Rec’d of Richard Hope 1.15.0 in full for 1 year’s window and half a year’s land tax due at Lady Day last. Rec’d of Mrs Elizabeth French, widow, in cash 2.15.9 in full for half a year’s land tax and one year’s window tax due at Lady Day last. Rec’d of Joseph Durrant in cash 0.17.0 in full for half a year’s land tax and one year’s window tax due at Lady Day last. Rec’d of John Nutley in cash 1.3.0 in full for half a year’s land tax and one year’s window tax due at Lady Day last.

Paid Ben Shelley in cash 1.16.0, which with the £81 and 9.14.0 sent him the 21st instant makes together the sum of 92.10.0 and is in full for the same sum he paid as under:

By cash paid the 22nd instant to Mr Allen Chatfield, distiller in Croydon, which with a receipt of 2.4.0 for one year’s land tax and also a receipt for 6
years’ quit-rent makes together the sum of 13.18.0 and is in full for 1 year’s rent due to Mrs Mary Mills from the devisees of Mr William Piper deceased, at Lady Day last (O.S.)

In the evening received by and from Sam Jenner a receipt from Mr Thomas Gerry, deputy receiver of the land tax for this county, that the draft delivered last night, value 110.13.3, (when paid) will be in full for all land tax and window duties due from the collectors of this parish at Lady Day last.

Sam Jenner coming in the evening late took part of my bed. In the evening read part of Pringle’s Treatise on the Diseases of the Camp and Army. Paid John Nutley in cash 7/8 in full for 1 bushel of flour on the parish account.
