Thursday, February 21 1754

I had the gardener at work to plant beans etc.; went to William Rice’s to inform him of Mr Chatfield’s intention to repair Chauntler’s (farm). Came home and found Mr Porter’s servants at cards and went to bed drunk.

Friday, February 22 1754

Went to Halland to ask Mr Coates’s advice concerning John Vine’s having files, hammers etc. charged as nails (i.e., legitimate repairs) for Laughton Place. Spent the evening at Jones’s with Mr Bancroft’s man Withington.

Sunday, February 24 1754

Went to church Sunday morning, and from thence my wife and I went to dinner at Halland and came home in the evening. Mr John Madgwick and Mr George Beard called at my house and supped.

Monday, February 25 1754

John Richards called at my house and told me of the malicious report at Lewes of my wife’s and my not agreeing. I then hired Elphick’s horse and went to Lewes. Found Mr Madgwick of that opinion.

Came home in the evening and drank tea with my wife with a great deal of pleasure to both. Spent 10d at Lewes.

Thursday, February 28 1754

Killed a hog. Had it of Mr French. Weighed 30 stone (locally 8lbs] at 2/2 the stone. Cut him out in the evening and sat up all night with Mr French, Thomas Fuller and Mr Hutson at cards and lost 2d.
