Mr Tomlin breakfasted at our house and then went away… Paid John Jenner the hatter in cash and goods [2].7.0 in full for 12 hate received by him today; viz.,

Rec’d of Matthew Lewer 2/9 in full; also received of him 10/6 on account of Mrs Mary Virgoe, which 10/6 Mrs Virgoe agrees for me to make received on my account. In the afternoon Mr Thornton carried my wife to Eason’s Green in order to see a cricket match. At home all day and thank God very busy.

Sundaqy, September 9 1759

In the morning about 5:20 set out for Alfriston to consult Dr Snelling further about my wife. I got there about 7:20. I breakfasted with Mr Snelling and spent the forenoon with him, but there being no churching I was not at church. I dined with Mr Snelling on a piece of roast beef, a pond currant butter pudding and cabbage (my family at home dining on a piece of boiled beef and a plain rice pudding). I came home about 5:30 very sober. Gave Mr Snelling’s servant 6d.

My brother came over in the forenoon. I gave him one bill on Mr Will Margesson… in full for the money I borrowed of him the 22nd ult. We dined on some boiled lamb and turnips, with the remains of yesterday’s diner. In the afternoon went with Mr Thornton to weigh some hops at Mr Piper’s and Mr Vine’s.

In the evening went down to Jones’s, there being a vestry called yesterday to make a poor rate, which we did at the rate of one shilling and sixpence to the pound, and which was signed by all present; viz., Thomas Fuller, churchwarden, John Cayley, overseer, John Vine, Jeremiah French, Will Piper, Joseph Durrant, Joseph Burgess, Richard Page, Joseph Fuller and myself. We cane home about 9:30…

Sent Mr Crouch (enclosed in a letter by Beckett and Shelley) the bill I received back from him the 7th instant, I having now directed it.

Thursday, September 13 1759

In the forenoon Mr Will Francis, Messrs Barlow and Wigginton’s rider, called on me. I gave him an order and then we rode to Framfield. I gave my brother one bill on Mr William Margesson value 6.19.6, which bill he owes me for. I went away immediately from Framfield to one Breach, a pedlar, almost as far as Horsted Keynes, to get a debt of his servant Lucy Smith, but could get no more of her than 2/-. I went home by Framfield, but did not stay. I got home about 5:20. My family at home dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner (as I did upon nothing)… My brother paid Mr Will Francis the bill I gave him today, which is in full on account of my late mother to Messrs Barlow and Wigginton.

Friday, September 14 1759

Master Hook made my wife a present of a carp… In the afternoon Mr Thornton carried my wife out for air, and after they came home I rode to Sandhill for a parcel which Master Divol was to bring from Lewes for me… Sent Mr Thomas Friend by Nick Divol 3 tod 3 lbs wool at 23/- per tod, 3.11.1½. Very little to do all day. In the evening Mr Thornton set with us some time.

Saturday, September 15 1759

In the forenoon rode over to Framfield, but did not stay. Paid Joseph Fuller Sr 6d for 1 lamb’s head and pluck received by him today. We dined on some lamb’s liver fried and some rashers of bacon. Thomas Cornwell made my wife a present of a few eels… Paid James Bull 12d in full for ½ bushel of potatoes received by him today. Paid John Cayley in cash and goods 4/- in full for 1 year’s rent for Mrs Browne’s stable, due about the 1st August.

Sunday, September 16 1759

No service at our church in the forenoon, Mr Porter preaching at Laughton. We dined on some eels perboiled and broiled, a lamb’s head and pluck boiled, potatoes and turnips. Myself, wife and servant at church in the afternoon… After churchtime Mr Thornton, my wife and self rode over to Framfield, but did not stay 10 minutes. Came home about 7:20. Lent James Marchant in cash 0.6.0. In the evening and the day read one of Tillotson’s sermons and part of the 3rd volume of Hervey’s Theron and Aspasio. Mary Heath lodged at our house.

Monday, September 17 1759

In the forenoon my brother came over and dined with us, as did Mary Heath, on an eel pudding, a lamb’s heart pudding, the remains of yesterday’s dinner and potatoes and turnips. I received of my brother in cash 8.17.9½ in full… In the afternoon Mr Thornton carried my wife out for air. Dame Lewer drank tea at our house… At home all day and thank God very busy. Mary Heath a-washing for us all day.
