Saturday, April 26 1760

In the forenoon walked down to Halland, where I received of Mr Coates in cash 5.8.0 in full to the 19th ult., inclusive, and 5/6 over, I not having silver to give change… Paid Joseph Fuller 12d for a calf’s pluck received by him today. We dined on some calf’s liver fried, and green salad. Sent Mr Coates by John Gibbs the 5/6 I received too much today… In the afternoon lent Mr John Long my horse to ride to Lewes upon… In the evening my brother Will came to see us, who supped with us and stayed all night.

Sunday, April 27 1760

No service at our church in the forenoon, Mr Porter preaching at Laughton. My brother stayed and dined with us on part of calf’s pluck and a piece of bacon boiled and turnip greens, and soon after dinner went away. My wife and self sat at church in the afternoon…

In the evening Mr Long at our house, to whom, and in the day, I read 3 of Tillotson’s sermons. Rec’d of my brother William 12 shillings on account.

Tuesday, April 29 1760

…Paid Mrs Rebecca Weller by her daughter Frances Weller in cash £4 which is in full for a year’s interest on a bond due the 5th instant. Also paid her £4 more, which is in full half a year’s rent due the 10th October last… At home all day and very little to do. Wrote out some bills. Neither myself nor wife well today…

Thursday, May 1 1760

…Thomas German a-gardening for me today, who dined with us on a neck of mutton boiled, a piece of bacon and a light pudding and turnip greens. Paid him 12d for his day’s work… At home all day; myself and wife both ill. Mr Long sat some time with us in the evening.

Friday, May 2 1760

In the forenoon my brother came over and borrowed my horse to go to Lewes upon. Dr Stone also paid me a visit. We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of a piece of bacon, a light pudding and greens… My brother cane back and supped with us.

Sunday, May 4 1760

My wife and servant at church in the morning. We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner, with the addition of a plain rice pudding. No service at our church in the afternoon, Mr Porter preaching at Laughton. Mr Long drank tea with us. In the evening and day read two of Tillotson’s sermons. In the evening my wife went down to see Mr Porter’s two youngest children, who are both very ill with fevers and inflammation of the lungs. Dr Stone paid me another visit. Thank God something better.

Monday, May 5 1760

…We dined on a piece of bacon boiled, a light pudding and greens. Mrs Atkins, Mrs Plumer, Mrs Brook and Mrs Hicks drank tea at our house. Rec’d of Mr Will Piper 16/- in full for money I paid for him on the parish account; viz.,
