Sam Jenner, a-drawing off a cask of cider for me, dined with me on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of some hog’s feet and ear. Rec’d of Joseph Fuller in cash 2.17.6 in full for 1 year’s window tax and half a year’s land tax due at Lady Day last. At home all day and pretty busy. My leg thank God something better.

My brother in church in the forenoon. Lent Mr Carman my horse in the forenoon. I dined on a sparerib roasted, and just as I had dined, Mr Read came to dress my leg. He dined on the remains. Delivered to Benjamin Shelley by my brother in cash £60 for him to pay in London for me… I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. At home all day and very little to do. Sam Jenner sat with me some time in the evening.

Wednesday, May 29 1765

In the forenoon out at work in the highways as surveyor. I dined on some pork bones boiled and greens. After dinner rode to Newhaven in order to put up a bed for my friend Tipper, which I had made before. I stayed with him a little in the evening and took part of his bed. Spent 2d for the turnpike.

Thursday, May 30 1765

In the morning I got up and put up Mr Tipper’s bed. He being gone to Lewes, I dined with his sister on a part of a shoulder of mutton roasted and green salad. After dinner I set out for home. I called at Mr Scrase’s to speak with Mr Tipper, where I stayed some time.

I drank tea with Mr Madgwick. Paid John Lambert in cash 1.15.0 in full. Paid Mr Abraham Curtis in cash 0.7.7 in full. Called at Malling on my intended wife, with whom I stayed and spent the evening till past 12 o’clock. Came home about 1:10…

Saturday, June 1 1765

Very busy in the forenoon. Paid Joseph Fuller Jr 18d for part of a loin of veal bought of him today weighing 5¼ lbs at 3½d. In the afternoon Mr Joseph Fuller and myself went out a-window-viewing.

In the evening myself, brother, Thomas Durrant, Sam Jenner and Joseph Fuller went over to Mr Burgess’s, where we spent 12d and came home about 12:10 not sober. Pretty busy all day. I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. Rec’d of Mr Coates 18d for half a year’s window tax due at Lady Day last. Bett Carman dined with me on part of a loin of veal roasted. After dinner I took a ride to Malling to see my intended wife, with whom I took a serious walk till about 9 o’clock when we parted. I came home about 9:45.

Sent Mr Will Hutchenson enclosed in a letter by Richard Page, delivered to himself, one bill on Mr Will Margesson, payable to Messrs Scrase and Whitfield, value in account of Mrs Mary Roase deceased, value 27.6.0, dated tomorrow, 3O days’ date, No. 654, which bill when paid is in full on my account with the late Mrs Roase.

I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. At home all day. Excessive hot. In the evening wrote my London letters. Paid Richard Fuller 10d for a calf’s bell bought of him today.
