My wife and self at church in the morning… We dined on a heart pudding and turnips. Myself, wife and servant at church in the afternoon… At home all day. In the evening and in the day read three of Tillotson’s sermons. A very cold windy day.

Monday, October 16 1758
We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of a light pudding and some turnips. This day Joseph Fuller and myself were bound for Mr Elless on account of his being hop-assistant. The bond was witnessed by the supervisor and our excise man Mr John Clinch. At home all day. Wrote out several bills. In the evening read part of Hervey’s Theron and Aspasio.
Tuesday, October 17 1758
In the afternoon wrote out Mr French’s bill. Mr Elless and Joseph Fuller smoked a pipe or 2 with me.
Wednesday, October 18 1758
…In the evening Mr Elless and myself walked down to Laughton to collect a debt of Master Shoesmith, but I could not see him. From thence we walked to Mr Sam Gibbs’s, where I carried a shroud etc. and where we stayed chatting I believe an hour. We also called at Master Bridgman’s as we came home, but did not stay. We came home about 8:15.
Thursday, October 19 1758
In the forenoon walked down again to Master Shoesmith’s, where I was so lucky as to find him… We dined on a loin of mutton boiled with some turnips and carrots. In the evening read part of Wiseman’s Chyrurgery.

Sunday, October 22 1758
In the morning myself, wife and servant at church; the text in the latter part of Romans 12:12: “Continuing instant in prayer.” We dined on some boiled tripe. My whole family at church again in the afternoon; the text the same as in the morning, from which words we had two extreme fine sermons. Thomas Davy at our house in the evening, to whom, and in the day, I read 4 of Tillotson’s sermons.
Monday, October 23 1758
Roger Vallow a-gardening for me all day; he dined with us on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of the root of a neat’s tongue boiled, an apple pudding, turnips and carrots. At home all day. In the evening wrote out part of the rough draft of a lease for a house from Mrs Mary Virgoe to Mr Will Lee.
Tuesday, October 24 1758
In the forenoon a-completing the rough draft of the lease begun last night. Gave a man 3d who came with a petition from East Peckham in Kent, who had sustained damages by fire. We dined on a leg of mutton boiled and turnips and carrots. In the afternoon my wife went down to Whyly to visit Mrs French, and about 7:30 I went down. We supped at Mr French’s on a piece of cold boiled beef and some rice milk. We came home about 11:30 and I think I may say sober.
