Very bad with a swelled face. Sam Slater came for Nanny; he breakfasted and dined with us. I received a letter which informed me of my mother’s cruelty against my wife and self. Freely forgave her and am willing to serve her to the utmost of my power, but came to a resolution to keep Will Cripps no longer.
Sam and Ann Slater went from Hoathly after dinner. I at home all day. Read part of Hervey’s Meditations.

At home all day. Read several numbers in The Spectator. Fortunatus Slater came in the evening. Had a hare given me but made no gratuity for it.
Wednesday, August 7 1754
At home all day. Fortunatus Slater stayed till 6 o’clock. Dame Hook drank tea with my wife this afternoon.
Thursday, August 8 1754
Called up in the morning to John Vine Jr. Sold him a frock and two waistcoats. Agreed with Dame Smith to nurse my wife at 2/6 per week. Paid 2d for a quart of gooseberries. At home all day.

At home all day. Mr Tucker dined with me and stayed the afternoon. I read part of Hervey’s Meditations and Nelson’s Festivals.
