…Mr William Francis, rider to Messrs Barlow and Wigginton, called on me in the forenoon, but I neither gave him order nor paid him any money. Paid Mr John Gosling in cash and goods 2/6 for 5 pairs men’s outseamed tan gloves received today.

We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. Very ill all day with a violent purging and a prodigious sickness. A most remarkable cold day, it freezing even by the fireside, as also in our bed-chamber. This day hired of Mr John Long the school-chamber at 10/- a year.

Friday, January 11 1760

Mr Francis Elless dined with us on a hog’s haslet roasted and applesauce. Rec’d of Mr Laurence Thornton in cash £5 in exchange for one bill I gave him on Mr Will Margesson… Mrs Browne, Molly and Bett Fuller drank tea with my wife, and they together with Mr Elless and Mr Thornton played at brag with us a while in the evening; my wife and I won 2½d. Molly and Bett Fuller supped with us on some bread and cheese. At home all day and thank God pretty busy. A most remarkable cold day.

Tuesday, January 8 1760

Paid Benjamin Shelley in cash £16, part of which he is to pay in London for me, and part of which is on account of carriage. Mary Heath a-washing for us all day, and dined with us on some hog’s liver, crow [mesentery], sweetbreads etc. After dinner my sister went home. Rec’d of John Watford half a hog weighing 17 stone 6 lbs at 2/- the stone. Balanced accounts with Richard Page and paid him in cash 1.3.3½ in full; viz.,

Friday, January 4 1760

After breakfast walked over to Framfield… My brother and I walked over to Uckfield where I got Mr Thornton, an attorney, to write 5 letters to Mrs Virgoe’s debtors, and one to Thomas Prall on my own account, for the doing of which I paid him 6/-; viz., 5/- on Mrs Virgoe’s account and 1/- on my own account. We came back and I dined at my brother’s on some cold meat pie… I brought my sister Sally home behind me, my horse already being at Framfield. Thomas Davy and James Marchant spent the evening with us. John Watford and his father a-hedging for me today.

Thursday, January 3 1760

In the forenoon my brother came over (in his road to Lewes) and I gave him 1 bill on Mr William Margesson, payable to him or order, dated tomorrow, 30 days’ date, value 18.19.0, No. 422, and I also gave him another bill on Mr William Margesson, dated the 7th instant, 30 days’ date, payable to him or order, No. 423, value 6.11.6, which two bills together make the sum of 25.10.6 and are in full for the note of hand I gave my brother the l4th of November last of the same value, and which note of hand I accordingly took up.

Balanced accounts with Mr Thomas Carman and paid him in cash 1.8.1 in full on my account; viz.,
