Whit Sunday, May 18 1755

At church in the morning; the text in the 4th chapter of 1st Epistle of John, 1st verse. My wife and I stayed the communion. Both gave ro [?]; both at church in the afternoon: the text, 5th chapter of 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians, 19th verse. After service, took a walk.

Tuesday, May 20 1755

Came home about 10 0’clock at night and in liquor, but have set a resolution never to get in liquor again. Spent in all about 8/-.

Wednesday, May 21 1755

My father [in-law] Slater came to see us I received 1.6.11½ of him in full. He went home again in the evening. Rec’d of J. Cornwell 2.2.3 on account.

Friday, May 23 1755

Went over to Framfield. Met my brother Moses; he brought me going [i.e., accompanied me] on my way home as far as Whyly.

Saturday, May 24 1755

Balanced accounts with Thomas Fuller and paid him 1.19.3 in full to the 20th February last. Bought of Mrs Virgoe 1 brew tub, 1 barrel, 1 other tub, for 1.17.0.
 

Sunday, May 25 1755

At church in the morning. Mayfield curate preached; the text, 2nd chapter of the Epistle to the Philippians, 12th verse. Not at church in the afternoon. Charles Diggens came over; went to bring him going.

Monday, May 26 1755

Very busy all the forenoon. Charles Diggens came over and took up a coat, waistcoat and breeches for Mr Porter, and a coat and waistcoat for Thomas Fuller.

In the afternoon went to see, a cricket match in the park between Hoathly and Framfield, which turned out a pretty match though it was not played out by reason of not having time, Framfield having 5 [runs] to fetch and 3 wickets to go down. Spent 2½d.

Tuesday, May 27 1755

At home all day and busy. Sent by Smith £20 to Margesson and Collison, and gave him 8/- to pay for books in London for me. Paid Mr Will Piper 6/6 for 2 bushels of malt. Paid Thomas Harman 30/- for Pipes brought this day as under:
