Thursday, May 29 1755

At home all day. Paid Thomas Freeman of Mayfield 7/- for half a dozen women’s cloth pattens and ½ dozen women’s cloth clogs.

Friday, May 30 1755

Rec’d of Ann Smith 9/- in full. Rec’d of Thomas Peckham 0.14.9¾. Paid Francis Smith 8/6, which with 8/- paid him on Tuesday is 16/6, which sum he paid to Messrs Woodgate and Crowder for me. J. Vine’s man at work from 7 o’clock to 2.

Sunday, June 1 1755

My wife and I both at church forenoon and afternoon. The text in the morning: the 18th chapter of Proverbs, 14th verse: “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear?” In the afternoon the text was the 13th verse of the 12th chapter of Ecclesiastes: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.”

After evening service paid Mr John Wigginton in cash £8 and by bill on Messrs Margesson and Collison, 30 days’ date, £9, which together makes £17 and remains due to Messrs Grant, Barlow and Wigginton £18. Mr Wigginton stayed and drank tea with us. Afterwards my wife and I went for a walk and called at Mr French’s. Stayed and smoked 2 pipes. Came home about 9:15.

Wednesday, June 4 1755

Samuel Slater went home about 5 o’clock in the morning. Dame Dallaway all day a-helping my wife quilt. Halland gardener gave me 3 cucumbers and Thomas Fuller, chandler, gave we 2 fine roach.

Rec’d of William Rice a stallage1 which J. B. said would be about 3/6.

At home all day. Paid the post 4/6 for ½ dozen women’s cloth pattens received of Thomas Freeman by him [i.e., through him] the 2nd instant.

Tuesday, June 3 1755

Sam Slater came in the forenoon. Rec’d of Thomas Tester 10/6 on account. Rec’d of Samuel Slater 2.10.11½ in full. Paid Joseph Fuller for a neck of veal weight 6½ lbs, 19½d. Ann Dallaway all day a-helping my wife quilt.

Friday, June 6 1755

At home all day. Thomas Nicholls a-gardening for me all day; paid him 15d. Paid Halland gardener 12d for 2 gallons gooseberries.
