At home all day and busy. Paid to Joseph Fuller for a shoulder of veal weight 11½ lbs, 2/10½. In the evening paid Mr Thomas Standing in cash 13.4.0 and by a bill on Messrs Margesson and Collison, 30 days’ date, No. 42, for £11 make together 24.4.0 and is in full on account of Messrs Hargrave and Standing unto this day.

Sunday, June 8 1755

About 6:05 in the morning my wife and I set out for Pevensey and got there about 9:15; we stayed all day, went down to the sea, saw the castle. Stayed until 7 o’clock and came home about 10. My wife and I spent 3/-.

Tuesday, June 10 1755

At home all day. Paid Mr Thomas Hartley 1.15.0 in full to this day for Messrs Warriner and Hartley. Gave him an order.

Wednesday, June 11 1755

At home all day. Paid Mary Martin in goods 30/- being in full 1 year’s wages, due the 25th March last (N.S.).

In reading The History of England I find that England first took that name under Egbert the 1st monarch of England after the Saxon Heptarchy, anno 801.

Thursday, June 12 1755

At home all day. In the afternoon Thomas Cornwell beat me at cricket; lost 6d. Paid Halland gardener 12d for 2 gallons of gooseberries.

Found in The History of England that England was first divided into counties, parishes etc. in King Alfred’s reign, about the year 890.

Friday, June 13 1755

At home all day. Paid Francis Smith in cash 3.16.5 and by my note of hand 4.18.0, which with 2.2.0 gave him the 9th instant makes in all 10.16.5, which money he paid in London for me as under:

At home all day. Paid Joseph Fuller 2/3½ for a neck of veal, 8½ lbs, and a pair of calves’ feet. Nothing more of moment.

Sunday, June 15 1755

Not at church all day. Mr Tucker and William Turner dined with me and stayed the afternoon. About 5:30 Mr Tucker and I went to Lewes. I came home about 9:10; spent nothing.

Monday, June 16 1755

At home all day. Paid Francis Smith 4.18.0 for the note of hand I gave him the 13th. Nothing more of moment.

Received 12d by Rippington’s two boys in full for their week’s schooling.
