My wife and I went over to Framfield. Found my mother very ill. Dined with her, posted her day book and wrote out Mr John Smith’s bill and the parish bill. Came home in the evening.

Monday, March 25 1754

Went to keeper Gibbs’s in the morning. Rec’d 21/6 of Susan Cornwell, his maid. Very busy all day. Borrowed Mr Thompsett’s bed, bolster and coverlid.

Paid Ann Denmall 25/- for wages. Mary Martin came to live with me at 30/- a year. Read The Conscious Lovers in the evening.

Tuesday, March 26 1754

Sent Mr Will Pooley 10.10.0. Drew on him to Messrs Margesson and Collison for 25.10.0. Sent Messrs Cruttenden and Burgess £24 by draft drawn by Friend to pay Collison £9. Drew on them to John Levy for val. 11.1.0 and to Crouch a draft £10.

Wednesday, March 27 1754

“Rec’d 27 March 1754 of Mr Thomas Turner eight pounds seventeen shillings — Grant, Barlow & Wigginton. 2.17.0” — Rest £23.

Spent the evening with Mr Wigginton at Jones’s. Mr Slater and Nanny came in the afternoon. Busy all day.

Thursday, March 28 1754

Mr Slater went to Lewes in the morning. Gave Mr John Wigginton an order. Paid Mr Thomas Harman for pipes as under:

Rec’d of John Jones 0.10.6. Sold Bett Akehurst the green poplin. Mr Slater went from my house. Went in the evening to shave Thomas Fuller. Paid Joseph Fuller for shoulder of mutton 18d.

Monday, April 1 1754

Nanny Slater and I went to Framfield. Came home in the evening. Wrote out Laughton Place bill for nails etc. Will Cripps came [to work for Turner] at 5.1.0 a year.
