Sent Laughton Place bill to John Vine Junior. Sent Mr George Otway £10. Paid Ed Barnard on account 3.3.0, which with the 3.3.0 paid before is in all 6.6.0.

Wednesday, April 3 1754

Went to Framfield, settled the parish account with Mr Stone, settled and balanced accounts with my mother and there remains due to me 33.3.7. Came home in the evening.

Thursday, April 4 1754

Mr Hill of [Little] Horsted came to my house to settle my brother Will Turner’s accounts. Did not do it. Appointed to meet them at Framfield on Sunday next. Sent Mr Thomas Darby 1.1.0. Paid Sam Waghorn 17.14.0 in full of all accounts to this day. Mr Hill went home in good time and sober.

Sunday, April 7 1754

My wife and Nanny and myself walked to Framfield to dinner and met Mr Hill and Will Turner. My wife and I came home in the evening and left Nanny at Framfield.

Tuesday, April 9 1754

Sent George Otway two bills drawn by Friend for £28 and in cash 8/- to pay Crouch £10 on my mother’s account; the remainder, 18.8.0, is in full of my mother’s account to the 1st of April 1754. This 28.8.0 I have received of my mother.

Went to Chailey and agreed with Mr Beard to take Richard Turner as an apprentice for seven years to come, from the first day of last January, and to be paid in hand £10, but it is agreed for the said Mr Beard to pay Richard Turner 2/6 on every quarter-day in the first year of his time, 5/- on every quarter-day in the second year, 7/6 a quarter in the third year, 10/- a quarter in the fourth year, 12/6 a quarter in the fifth year, 15/- a quarter for the sixth year and 17/6 a quarter for the 7th and last year. But the said George Beard is, after the expiration of the 7 years, to be paid 10 pounds four shillings if he, the said George Beard, thinks proper to demand it.

I came home in the evening. Spent 5d.

Wednesday, April 10 1754

Sent to Framfield in the morning to acquaint my mother of the agreement. Came home in the afternoon with Charles Diggens and sold Master Darby a frock etc. Will Bowman’s time out, agreed for him to go away and paid him, for 8 weeks’ servitude, 30/-.

Thursday, April 11 1754

The audit [of manorial accounts of Pelham and Newcastle properties] at John Vine’s; I went in the evening. Came home about 8 o’clock and sober. Rec’d my bills, 3.13.6. Gave his daughter 12 pence.
