…We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner… Sarah Taylor (late servant to Mr Porter), being in this neighbourhood, lodged at our house. In the evening a good deal indisposed with a stitch-like pain in my side, breast and back.

…Paid Richard Fuller 14d for 1 neck of mutton weighing 4 lbs and which our servant bought today… Sarah Taylor breakfasted with us. Not thoroughly well all day. Rec’d of Mrs Atkins by her servant 1.15.4 in full (the bill delivered was 1.15.5¾). Rec’d of Joseph Fitness at Laughton 5/5 in full on account of the widow Virgoe. Sarah Taylor lodged at our house.

Sarah Taylor breakfasted with us. In the forenoon Mr Stone paid me a visit and bleeded me. Our servant only at church in the morning. The widow smith at Laughton and her granddaughter dined with us on a piece of bacon boiled, some boiled mutton, a light pudding and turnip greens. No service at our church in the afternoon, Mr Porter preaching at Ripe today, and his curate Mr Chalice preached here today in the morning, and as went to Laughton in the afternoon. Paid the widow Virgoe the 5/5 I received of Joseph Fitness yesterday on her account. At home all day. My side bad, and I am fearful whether I shall ever get the better of it.

My brother came over in the morning and stayed and dined with us… At home all day and thank God somewhat better. In the evening wrote my London letters. Rec’d of Thomas Davy in cash 5/-, being in part for his and Master Hook’s club arrears. Sent by John Streeter 11/3, it being in full for mine, Master Hook’s and Thomas Davy’s club arrears due on quarterly night, which is the 24th instant.

In the morning rode to Master Chipper’s at Laughton to speak to him for to serve the nails for Counsellor Russell’s house which is a-going to be repaired. Came back to breakfast… Gave Mr Sam Beckett in cash £3 for him to pay in town for me this week. We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner, with the addition of a plain rice pudding… Posted my day book and wrote out some bills…

After breakfast my wife walked over to Framfield… Thomas Davy went in the evening to bring my wife home on horseback, who came home about 8:15… At home all day and thank God very well and pretty busy. My wife received of my brother 3/- on account of the widow Smith.

In the forenoon rode round by Thomas Fuller’s and Mr Vine’s. We dined on a piece of bacon, some turnip greens and a butter pudding cake. Lent Mr John Vine Jr by Elizabeth Akehurst in cash two guineas. At home all day except as above, and but very little to do.

After breakfast rode to Mr Burgess’s at Rotherfield to consult him concerning Mrs Virgoe’s affairs. I stayed there about an hour and came home about 11:15… Paid John Jenner, hatter at Hailsham, in cash and goods 1.1.9 in full for the hats received by him today as under:

Mr Elless drank tea at our house.

In the forenoon walked down to Halland, where I received of Mr Coates in cash 5.8.0 in full to the 19th ult., inclusive, and 5/6 over, I not having silver to give change… Paid Joseph Fuller 12d for a calf’s pluck received by him today. We dined on some calf’s liver fried, and green salad. Sent Mr Coates by John Gibbs the 5/6 I received too much today… In the afternoon lent Mr John Long my horse to ride to Lewes upon… In the evening my brother Will came to see us, who supped with us and stayed all night.

No service at our church in the forenoon, Mr Porter preaching at Laughton. My brother stayed and dined with us on part of calf’s pluck and a piece of bacon boiled and turnip greens, and soon after dinner went away. My wife and self sat at church in the afternoon…

In the evening Mr Long at our house, to whom, and in the day, I read 3 of Tillotson’s sermons. Rec’d of my brother William 12 shillings on account.
