In the morning Thomas Davy, myself and Mr Long walked to Laughton Church (Mr Porter preaching there), the text in 2 Timothy 2:25: “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.”
We dined on a beef and bread pudding, greens and spinach. My wife, self and maid at church in the afternoon… After churchtime my wife, self and Mr Long walked down to Whyly to see Mr Calverley. We came home about 7:40. My brother came over in the evening, but did not stay. In the day read two of Tillotson’s sermons.
Monday, May 12 1760
Early in the morning my brother came over and borrowed my horse to ride to Lewes upon. Thomas German at work for me all day and Mary Heath a-washing for us half the day; both dined with us on a piece of pork and a piece of beef boiled and greens.
Rec’d of Mr John Vine Jr the two guineas I lent him the 24th ult. Dame Page drank tea at our house. At home all day and pretty [busy], but took very little money. Paid Thomas German 16d for his day’s work.

Mary Heath a-washing for us all the day, and dined with us on the remains of yesterday’s dinner, with the addition of a piece of pork and bacon boiled, spinach and a light pudding boiled. After breakfast I rode to Heathfield where there was a sale of shop goods, one Stephen Smith and his son having failed in trade. I bought several odd things for which I paid Mr Robert Olive the salesman 3.5.3. From thence I went to my brother’s at Framfield, where I drank tea (or rather dined)… After tea my brother and I went to Uckfield Fair where we stayed about 1 hour and half. I came back with my brother by Framfield but did not stay. I came home about 7:50… A very fine pleasant day, and I think there was a large fair.
Holy Thursday, May 15 1760
In the morning my brother called on me in his road to Dicker Fair, but did not stay. After breakfast I went to the sale again, but could not buy anything to my mind, so did not stay any time. My family at home dined on the remains of Tuesday’s dinner, as did I when I came home, on some bread and butter and tea. I spent today 6d. At home all the remainder of the day, and but very little to do. A melancholy time.

After breakfast walked down to Halland with some goods. In the forenoon finished posting my day book… In the afternoon Mr Meadows Neatby called on me and stayed and drank tea with us. At home all day, but not very busy.
