…I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner, with the addition of some boiled mutton and pickles. Rec’d of Francis Turner 12/- in full for half a year’s land tax and 3/- in full for 1 year’s house duty, both due at Lady Day last. Rec’d of Mr Bannister in cash 3.3.0, which with £4 he paid me the 19th ult. makes together the sum of 7.3.0 on account of the receipt for land tax I gave him the 11th ult.

Mr Read paid me a visit and dressed my leg, which is really very bad, and stayed and drank tea with me. Sam Jenner called in the evening to see me and stayed all night. At home all day and my brother very busy in the shop. Rec’d of a Thomas Prall the 12d paid for him on Friday last.

…Dame Akehurst a-scouring for me all day and she and Sam Jenner, who stayed to keep me company, dined with me on a piece of beef boiled and greens and part of the scrag end of a neck of veal boiled… My brother came over in the afternoon to see me and stayed and spent the evening with me. At home all day; my brother very busy in the shop. Mr Carman smoked a pipe or two with me in the evening. My leg very bad.

Paid Mr Ben Shelley in cash 11.6.4 in full for money he paid for me… Mr Ben Shelley then paid me in cash 1.11.6 in full for the same sum he had received of Mr Richard Jewett by the payment of Mr Doble at East Grinstead and which is in full for a fiddle due to John Long at Ringmer and which I have given his late son’s account credit for.

In the afternoon my friend Mr Breeden called on me in his road home from Nutley Fair; I received of him 1.16.8 in full. He stayed and spent the evening with me and stayed all night. Mr Read paid me another visit and dressed my leg. At home all day and my brother very busy in the shop.

My brother at church in the morning. Mr Breeden stayed and dined with me on part of a neck of veal roasted, a plain rice pudding and green salad. Mr Breeden went away in churchtime. My brother and servant at church in the afternoon. Sam Jenner stayed and kept me company during the time the people were at church, to whom I read one of Tillotson’s sermons. He and Tom Davy drank tea, to whom I read another of Tillotson’s sermons.

I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. At home all day. Mr Read paid me another visit and dressed my leg. In the evening wrote my London letters.

…My brother came over in the morning to cut out a bed for me, and dined with me on a knuckle of veal boiled, a piece of pork and Savoy greens. At home all day and pretty busy. My brother stayed and spent the evening with me, as did Sam Jenner, who took part of my bed. My leg continues very bad. In the evening Mr Peter Pellin and I played a few games of cribbage; I won 4d.

Lent Richard Page in cash 1.1.0. I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner. At home all day and busy a-making of bed. My leg continues bad.

I dined on a fillet of veal roasted and stuffed and green salad. At home all day; busy a-making a bed. In the evening Mr Pellin and I played a few games of cribbage; I won 6d. My leg continues very bad.

Rec’d of Richard Page the guinea lent him the 8th instant. I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of some green salad. Paid Ben Shelley in cash by his brother John Shelley 2.18.0 in full… At home all day. Completed making my bed. My leg very painful.

…I dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner minced. Mr Blackman’s two maid servants drank tea with me. At home all day; my leg very painful. In the evening my intended wife and her sister called to see me and sat with me some time. This may possibly be imputed to the girl as fondness, but I must do her the justice to say I esteem it only friendship and good manners. For I have never met with more civil and friendly usage from any one of the fair sex than I have from this girl.
