At home all day. Sent Francis Smith by his boy £8 which he is to pay in London for me (see Saturday). Ed Smith here in the evening. Nothing more of moment. Paid for flour etc. 12d.

Tuesday, March 18 1755

Received of Mr Francis Hicks 4/2 in full on Mr T. Thompsett’s account. At home all day except in the evening at Mr Durrant’s. After supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Wednesday, March 19 1755

Rec’d of Will Inkpin 6/3 in full. Sent Will to Framfield. My wife and I drank tea at Mr Clinch’s; stayed the evening. After supper read the description of the grotto of Antiparos in Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Thursday, March 20 1755

In the morning sent Will to collect in some debts. He received of Susan Cornwell £1 and there remains due to me £1. I balanced Mr Thomas Thompsett’s account with Robert Hook and received of him 4/3¾:

Friday, March 21 1755

At home all the morning except in at Mr Durrant’s instructing Thomas. After dinner my wife and I went to Mr French’s; stayed till 9 o’clock and came home very sober. This day balanced accounts with Mrs Rippington for her husband Richard Rippington.

I received those goods the 17th instant. Paid Mr Jeremiah French (by John Badcock) in money 13 ½ d and by goods 9d, which together makes 22½d for a roasting pig received this day, weight 7½ lbs. Frank Smith came late; he gave me Margesson’s receipt for the £8 sent by his boy the 17th instant.

Monday, March 24 1755

At home all day. Paid Mrs Virgoe in cash 10.15.1½ and by goods had the 18th instant as per day book 0.4.10½, which makes £11 and is in full for the sum borrowed of her the 4th instant; and took up my note of hand dated that day. In the evening read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Tuesday, March 25 1755

Received of Elizabeth Akehurst 1.15.3 in full and which was charged to John Jones’ account. Received of my mother 3/3 in full for 6 lbs shop thread. Paid Bonwick’s carter 4/6; (to wit) 18d which he paid in Lewes for bottoming 3 chairs and 3/- for 1 dozen dairy brushes which he bought in Lewes.

Paid Dame Vinal 9d for washing. In the evening in at Master Durrant’s. After supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage.
