Sent Thomas Davy to Lewes for 3 oz candy lemon peel for Mrs Porter. Paid him for going 0.1.0. Rec’d of George Colvill 0.9.2 in full. At home all day, except carrying up the wine to Mrs Piper’s after supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Saturday, March 8 1755

At the funeral of Mrs Piper. Distributed at the funeral and afterwards 20 prs men’s and women’s 2d shamy [chamois] gloves, 3 prs youth’s and maid’s and 8 hatbands.

Will served Mr Thompsett’s [funeral] and gave away 8 prs men’s white lamb [gloves]. There was a sermon for Mrs Piper. The text: the 2nd chapter Revelation, 10th verse.

Paid Francis Smith 0.10.6, which sum he paid Messrs Dicey’s in full for me. Rec’d of Martha Mepham 0.10.0 in full to this day. Rec’d of Ed Babcock Jr 0.10.6 in full. In the evening went down to Whyly to hire Mr Virgoe’s house to teach school in. After supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Sunday, March 9 1755

In the morning Mr Clinch and myself went down to the late Mr Thompsett’s house and looked over his affairs, but found nothing material. I engaged myself to get in his debts and pay all disbursements. Came home to dinner. At home all the afternoon; not at church all day. Ed Smith at my house in the first part of the evening. After supper read part of The Whole Duty of Man.

Monday, March 10 1755

At home all day. Paid Sarah Thunder on Mr Thompsett’s account 0.4.0 in full and received at the same time of her 16d in full on my own account. Sent Francis Smith in cash by his man £6 which he is to pay in London (see Saturday next). In the evening went down to Mr French’s; paid him in money 0.7.8½ and by goods had, but never charged to him in my book, 0.8.3½, which is in all 0.16.0, and in full for 4 bushels boiling peas had of him this winter.

Tuesday, March 11 1755

In the morning went down to Mr Porter’s. Hired Mr Virgoe’s new house at 50/- per year, to enter upon it at Lady Day next, N.S., to make whatever use I like of it as a warehouse; agreed to give him 0.1.6 for beans etc. planted. Balanced with Mr Will Piper and received of him as under:

I received of Master Hook a hat of 12/-, which I am to exchange for another, or anything else to the same value. Afterwards paid Master Hook the above 0.12.0 in goods, Thomas Davy and Master Hook stayed the evening. Thomas Davy and I went to cribbage. I won 1d.

Wednesday, March 12 1755

At home all day. Mr Barnard Pooley’s rider, was with me. I paid him in cash 10.4.0 and by bill on Messrs Margesson and Collison, val. £17, dated this day, 30 days’ date, which both together make 27.4.0 and leave due to Mr William Pooley £15.

Rec’d of Master Bridgman for Mr T. Thompsett 0.2.0 in full. In the evening read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant.

Thursday, March 13 1755

In the forenoon posted part of my day book and wrote out some bills. After dinner Joseph Durrant and I went to Mr Milllar’s at Burghill [an estate in Chiddingly]. Mr Millar promised me his son should come to me to school. I received of him 18d due to Mr T. Thompsett for 6 weeks’ schooling Henry. Came home about 5:30, drank tea and went into Joseph Durrant’s to instruct Thomas. After supper read The Tragedy of Macbeth, which I like very well.

Friday, March 14 1755

In the morning set Will to digging in Mr Virgoe’s garden. Posted more of my day book and wrote out some bills. Balanced Mr Thomas Thompsett’s accounts with Joseph Fuller Sr as under:

Rec’d of Joseph Fuller Sr 2.5.5, which with the balance of Mr Thompsett’s account (to wit) 0.16.10 makes 3.2.3, which is in full of all accounts due from Mr Sam Durrant of Lewes to me. Rec’d of Will Eldridge 6/-, which with 16d I owed him makes 7/4 and is in full to this day. Paid Mr John Gosling 10d for mending a pair of breeches for Mr Thompsett. Rec’d of Ann Durrant 0.10.4 in full. In the evening at Master Durrant’s. After supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage.

Saturday, March 15 1755

Rec’d of Thomas Prall 0.11.0 in full. Rec’d of Thomas Dallaway 0.18.10 on account and remains 1.7.10½. In the morning sent Will to Framfield. Rec’d of Susan Swift 5/9 in full. Rec’d of Thomas (son of Francis] Turner 9d in full. Rec’d of Mary Heath 14½d in full.

Paid Richard Goldsmith 18d which he paid in Lewes for bottoming of 3 chairs for me. Paid Francis Smith £4 which with £6 sent him the tenth instant makes £10 which he paid in London to Mr John Crouch for me. Paid Master Baker in goods 18d in part for burying Mr T. Thompsett.

Wrote out East Hoathly parish bill and finished South Malling parish bill. Rec’d of Thomas Tester 19/- on account. In the evening at Joseph Durrant’s or otherwise at home all day. After supper read part of Tournefort’s Voyage into the Levant. Nothing more of moment.

Sunday, March 16 1755

At church in the morning; the text, 7th verse, 1st chapter Haggai and an exceeding good sermon. Charles Diggens and Will Stone dined with me and went away soon after dinner. Not at church in the afternoon. In the evening read part of the New Whole Duty of Man.
