Thursday, May 3 1759

Mr Breeden and I dined at Framfield on the remains of Tuesday’s and yesterday’s dinners with a plain rice pudding. Today we completed the appraising the stock-in-trade and stayed and drank tea at Framfield and then came home about 7:10. Mr Breeden supped and lodged at our house. In the evening ill with a sore throat, swelled face and the fever. Thomas Davy supped with us on account of his riding Mr Breeden’s mare over to Framfield, but we were come away before.

Sunday, May 6 1759

Our servant only at church in the morning. we dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of part of a shoulder veal roasted. My brother came over in the afternoon and stayed with me while my wife and servant went to church in the afternoon. He stayed and drank tea with us and then went home. In the evening and the day read 2 of Tillotson’s sermons and part of the second volume of Hervey’s Meditations. At home all day and, thank God, much better.

Monday, May 7 1759

We dined on the remains of yesterday’s dinner with the addition of a piece of beef boiled and some greens. In the evening we went down to Jones’s to the vestry where there were Mr Jeremiah French, John Cayley, Will Piper, Thomas Fuller, Richard Page, Ed Foord and Mr Burgess. I came home about 9:15. Rec’d back by Mr Thomas Fuller a receipt from Mr Stephen Fletcher for the bill sent today. Thank God I have been very busy all day and at home. Mrs Hill of Cuckfield and my cousin Molly Hill, Mrs Piper and her servant and daughter drank tea at our house.

Thursday, May 10 1759

Mr John Breeden called on me and breakfasted at our house, and then we walked over to Framfield and appraised my mother’s household goods… We came back to our house, and Mr Breeden went home. John Watford Jr a-gardening for me all day. My wife in my absence… sent by the post 3/9 to Mayfield for my club arrears, this being a quarterly meeting.
